Kirby Smart recently told media outlets that while they have three guys vying to start at quarterback for the 2016 season, he needs to see some improvement from all three. Tony Barnhart, broadcaster on the SEC Network, weighed in with his thoughts.
“That’s exactly right. You’ve got a senior in Greyson Lambert who started 12 games last year, but is limited in what he can do and everybody understands that. You’ve got Bryce Ramsey who has played some in his career and, of course, there is true freshman Jacob Eason.”
Barnhart then recalled what he was told by other coaches and stated, “A quarterback has got to prove that he belongs in the job. He’s got to win over the team and that’s not an easy process,” Barnhart said.
“Now would they like to name a quarterback early in? Yeah, they absolutely would, but unless some guy steps up and takes the job, then they may go into the season playing more than one quarterback.
Many UGA fans are clamoring for Eason to take over the reigns for the 2016 season and beyond after watching Lambert struggle against better competition in 2015, but that might not be the case. Whatever Smart plans on doing for the opening game in the Georgia Dome against North Carolina on September 3rd, is unknown to fans and broadcasters alike. Smart has not been as transparent as former head coach Mark Richt, which has added extra excitement – or stress in some cases – to college football fans in the country.
