February 3rd is National Signing Day and this last week and half of the recruiting period are certainly going to be critical and will definitely change a lot of things. UGA has 15 recruits signed so far, but new head coach Kirby Smart hasn’t been there long, so they are still working hard on completing their class.
For the purpose of this post, Scout.com, ESPN, 24/7 Sports and Rivals, will be used to get a well-rounded interpretation of how things are going. This way there is no bias towards any particular source.
Scout has UGA ranked 10th overall, 5th in the SEC (2nd in the East behind Florida). The highest rated recruit for UGA, according to Scout, is their #7 overall prospect Jacob Eason (#2 QB & 5 stars). Eason is from Lake Stevens, WA, and with UGA’s recent QB struggles, many Atlanta and UGA pundits have begun calling him “The Savior”, which will certainly put a lot of pressure on him. The other major recruit according to Scout is Isaac Nauta who is Scout’s 30th best prospect (#1 TE & 5 stars) and will give Eason a large target to throw to. Nauta is out of IMG Academy in Bredenton, FL.
ESPN has UGA ranked 7th overall, 4th in the SEC (2nd in the East behind UF). ESPN has Eason ranked 13th, although they have Nauta ranked 8th. ESPN also has UGA in the hunt for their #1 ranked prospect DT Rashan Gary out of Paramus, NJ which would certainly give them an enormous lift, both figuratively and literally (6’4″ 287). ESPN also has 5 star DT Derrick Brown listing UGA as a finalist for his services, and he is a home-grown recruit as a soon-to-be graduate of Lanier High School in Sugar Hill, GA.
24/7 Sports, like ESPN, has UGA listed at 7th overall, 4th in the SEC (2nd in the East behind UF). 24/7 has Eason listed 5th overall, Nauta listed 12th and just ahead of him is WR commit Javon Wims who is ranked 11th overall by 24/7.
Rivals has UGA with the worst ranking among the four major recruiting sites at 15th, 7th in the SEC (still 2nd in the East). Eason is also rated 7th overall by Rivals Nauto is 23rd and their next highest rated prospect is RB Elijah Holyfield (son of one of the best boxers of all-time Evander Holyfield) who is ranked #108 and is out of Woodward Academy in College Park, GA.
UGA may not have filled out their 25 scholarship a year limit, but they still have a very solid class with some major chances still available that could potentially jump them into the top five recruiting ranks if they can land some of the major recruits that have still not committed. It should certainly be a fun finish.
Last year UGA was 4th on Scout, 8th on ESPN, 5th on 24/7 and 6th on Rivals.
